Something Stormy landed in Bermuda…

Continuing to find interesting people in Bermuda through Social Media! Who would have thought that the first time I have really heard about a female football league called the LFL would be by looking at beautiful photos of Bermuda on Twitter!

Meet Elicia Stormy Monroe, a recent visitor to Bermuda. Elicia being an LFL player was enough to peak my interest to find out more, but as you will see in this interview there is much more to her then killing it on the field!

Read on to find out more….!

Can you talk a little about your background and how you ended up in Bermuda?

I was vacationing in Bermuda with the Metro Atlanta Chamber as I am the Liason/Captain for the Atlanta Region with Wells Fargo Bank.

What can you tell us about the LFL?

The Legends Football League (LFL) is the only professional women’s full contact arena football league. There are 10 USA teams, 6 Australian, 4 European and 4 Canadian teams. It is the highest platform for women to play football. Most of the women are past athletes in college or semi pro. The women have other careers stemming from Attorney’s, Trainers, Bankers, Teacher’s etc. We are the most RESILIENT Athletes on the PLANET.

Can you tell us your thoughts on Bermuda and how it differs from other countries you’ve visited?

Bermuda by far is the most manicured island I have visited. The culture is amazing and so are the people of Bermuda. Everyone I encountered was polite and always willing to help, from the taxi’s to bus trips.

Can you give us a brief walk through of your day to day?

I am the Vice President of Sales & Marketing at Wells Fargo for the Atlanta Region by day. I also have my own company Architects Entertainment Group, LLC that specialize in all things entertainment (night life, TV, Movies and production). I also play professional Women’s Football and Model with the AMT AGENCY.

What can you tell us of some of the challenges you had to get started and recognized in your LFL career?

The most challenging is people getting used to seeing a female play a physical contact sport that has been male dominated since birth. Our uniforms are also very revealing (professional beach volleyball attire), but I enjoy being physically competitive while remaining feminine. We wear helmets, shoulder, elbow and knee pads.

For someone who is interested in going into a profession like yours can you tell us of what physical fitness is generally required?

This sport is NOT for everyone. The time commitment on and off the field is huge. We practice often at night into the early hours of the morning due to the athletes having other careers at least 3 times per week. Outside of practice you MUST remain in top physical condition by training on your own. What you think is the most physical intense activity you have put your body through…multiply it by 100%. The league and all athletes are ingrained in the community at all levels (mentoring, giving back, volunteering, Fan events).

Have you visited Bermuda before? If not, would you like to come back?

This was my first visit and I will be back!

What are some of the best things you like about Bermuda?

The beaches and cleanliness of the island were impeccable. The people and accessibility (taxi, bus, ferry) were a huge plus.

How much travelling do you get to do for work? What are the some of the highs and lows of working and travelling around the world?

Most of my traveling is done locally, but once per year I take an international trip with the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce and 2 personally.

What type of training did you have to do to become a professional athlete?

The training is very aggressive and is a combination of weights, cardio and sport specific training and eating.

What are your personal goals and ambitions?

I want to become one the TOP diverse Women Business owners in Atlanta. My goal is to show women that we can be anything by breaking the mold. I am a Vice President in corporate America, Professional Women’s Football Player, Business Owner and Model. None of these go together, but I do it because I can.

How would you encourage more women to get into sports?

Playing sports gave me the structure and discipline needed to succeed in life. It’s very important that we break down the barriers for our young girls. Look at Mone’ Davis the only female starting pitcher in the little league Baseball World Series.

Where and when can those interested watch you and the rest of the league play? or the season start in April and ends in September.

Describe Bermuda in three words.

Elicia is an inspiration that you can truly do anything you want if you set your mind to it. The world is there to take it, and it looks like Elicia is taking the world by Storm!

Thanks for visiting and sharing such kind words about Bermuda! Look forward to seeing you here in Bermuda soon and kicking it up on the football field! 🙂
